Hooked on Farms

My love for old dilapidated farm houses, chicken coops, and silos began in 2008. Moving to Greeley, Colorado was without a doubt the best decision I made in my career as an artist. Living in a small town surrounded by miles of farmland and abandoned houses increased my need to explore.

Two particular artists influenced me during this time of growth and discovery, the first was Kurt Schwitters an assemblage artist who created his own movement “Merz” in Germany. Kurt’s assemblage artwork pushed my own to new depths and inspired me to use objects that were no longer considered valuable to society. The second was Grant Wood, the “American Gothic”. His color choices and subject matter helped refine my own color palette and increased my love and respect for farm life.

I felt an urge to add more three dimensional objects to every new piece. I became addicted to building my paintings from the ground up, until one day I created an entire painting out of wood. After that I could never go back to just two dimensional painting, and I haven’t since.

Around that same time I began looking for more objects to attach to my paintings. I found value in old, worn, discarded things that most people wouldn’t notice. Rusted cans, sun bleached wood, yellowed newspapers, and broken glass all became a part of my work. If you ask anyone who knows me and my artwork they can tell you that I have a room dedicated to storing these items but I always seem to find more to collect!

My passion for time worn man-made objects bloomed over the last 5 years and as time went on all of my color choices came from the Colorado landscape or directly from the objects themselves. I found myself continually inspired by Colorado’s unique color palette. The ever changing landscape and beautiful hues are now deeply ingrained in my artwork and in my heart.

Colorado has also made its way into the three dimensional aspects of my work. I use plant life in my work that is only available at certain times throughout the year. More recently I have been inspired by the Colorado Flag and culture. The pride Coloradans have for their state is a reminder of how much we are all inspired by and love where we live. Using found objects and Colorado designed colors in my work creates a constant challenge for me as an artist and I love it!
